I really am proud of this marketing video I produced for Evansville Regional Airport for what at first may seem like two very unrelated reasons. One – it takes full advantage of leveraging the most powerful use of social media and two – it took me back to my roots. Let me try to explain…
First, let me honestly say, I’m not a huge fan of social media – at least not the way it is currently used by the majority of users. If you know me, shocking, I know. Call me old-fashioned, but I tend to stay away from Facebook, Twitter and similar sites because I feel a lot of social media gets regurgitated and becomes simply snippy, condescending or boastful. While the immediacy can be potent and powerful, it also often lacks a certain amount of needed reflection and thought before it gets spewed quickly out into the world – to remain indefinitely negative.
When used differently, however, social media can be an effective tool for people and companies to share information, along with their philosophies and ideas. And this, in turn, creates positive messages in the community, and by extension, reflects back onto businesses and the people who run them. I call that a win – win. 🙂
I feel this video is a great example of how to leverage social media in a very positive, perhaps more “organic” way, by letting the “story” essentially tell itself. The Evansville Regional Airport hosts young campers from what’s called STEM (science, technology, engineering, mathematics) camp at cMoe (the Children’s Museum of Evansville). Lots of acronyms to take in there! Campers get to spend an entire day (at the end of a full week of activities) at Tri-State Aero and the Airport getting to learn, in a very first-hand way, about the magic of flight from those who know best. This video hopefully gives you an insight into what those campers get to experience.
The other reason I enjoyed producing it, was that it was almost like shooting tv news again, my first job behind a video camera. I started out early in my career as a news photographer for the local CBS affiliate. Covering this camp and trying to get “the shot” in a situation when many things are happening at once was a little bit like returning to my roots. And I enjoy that true documentary approach in filmmaking – completely catching the moment as it happens as opposed to trying to re-create it artificially. Don’t get me wrong, I enjoy producing narrative commercials too. But I feel like the best advice most people give for the act of writing – “show don’t tell” – works really well for today’s social media too. Hope you enjoy.
